A thermal monocular becomes genuinely useful when the settings support the conditions instead of fighting them. The practical sequence is simple: focus the eyepiece, focus the objective, calibrate when the image degrades, choose a restrained palette and scan methodically.
Karoo Outdoor note: Thermal detects heat; it does not automatically identify species, sex, ownership, a safe background or a lawful shot. Confirm every target with appropriate visual identification and follow the rules that apply to the land and activity.

1. Set the diopter before anything else
Turn on the device and adjust the eyepiece diopter until the menu icons and screen information are crisp. This adjusts the display to your eye. Do it once carefully, then leave it unless another person uses the monocular.
2. Focus the objective for distance
The objective focus controls the scene. A nearby fence and an animal 300 metres away cannot both be perfectly focused. Refocus as the observation distance changes. Many “blurry sensor” complaints are simply focus or excessive digital zoom.
3. Calibrate when the image becomes flat
Thermal sensors periodically recalibrate to maintain a clean image. Automatic mode is convenient for beginners. Manual mode gives the user control over when the brief image freeze occurs. A shutterless or semi-automatic system may behave differently, so use the terminology in the exact model manual.
4. Start with White Hot or Black Hot
White Hot and Black Hot usually provide the clearest general view. Red Hot can make a warm target quick to notice, while rainbow palettes may help separate temperature bands but can hide fine shape. Use colour to detect; return to a simple palette when shape and context matter.
5. Balance brightness, contrast and amplification
Maximum brightness is rarely best. It causes eye fatigue and can wash out background detail. Begin near the middle, lower screen brightness until comfortable, then raise contrast only enough to separate the subject from terrain. High amplification helps in low thermal contrast but can add noise.
6. Scan slowly and overlap each pass
Move in controlled horizontal bands, overlapping the previous field of view. Pause on edges, fence lines, water points and patches of cover. A compact device such as the Pulsar Axion 2 LRF XQ35 Pro is designed for this one-handed scanning role.
Understanding detection versus identification
The Axion product listing quotes detection of a standard 1.8 m object to 1,300 m. That does not mean reliable species identification or an ethical shooting decision at that distance. Detection asks “is heat present?” Identification asks “what exactly is it?” The second distance is always shorter and changes with weather, vegetation, target size and operator skill.

- Charge the main and spare battery before leaving.
- Keep a cold spare inside clothing during winter nights.
- Clean only with optics-safe materials.
- Use a lanyard and replace lens caps during vehicle travel.
- Record short clips when useful, but do not let recording distract from observation.

Why does the image freeze?
The device is probably calibrating. This is normal and typically brief.
Why is the image noisy?
Check focus, reduce digital zoom, calibrate and adjust amplification. Warm, humid weather can also reduce thermal contrast.
Which colour mode is best?
White Hot or Black Hot is the best starting point. Choose another palette only when it solves a specific observation problem.
